Beef Gyros with Tzatziki sauce

Simple and easy to make and so delicious. I prepped the meat in the morning and allowed it to marinate all day. You could also prep the salad and the tzatziki in the morning too and then all you'd have to do is cook the steak later on.

Beef Gyros
Serves 6

  • 800g rump steak
  • Juice of one lemon
  • 3 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 1/2 tablespoons fresh oregano chopped
  • Salt and pepper to season
  • 3 teaspoons garlic powder
  • 12 pita breads
  • 4 tomatoes sliced into half moons
  • 1/2 cup sliced red onion
  • 2 cups lettuce mix
  • Olive oil for frying
For the tzatziki
  • 1 cup plain greek yogurt
  • 2 teaspoons dried dill
  • Juice of half a lemon
  • 1 garlic clove grated
  • 1/2 cucumber deseeded, finely chopped and drained on a paper towel
  • Salt and pepper to season

1. In a bowl combine the juice of one lemon, oregano, olive oil and 3 teaspoons garlic powder. Season with salt and pepper. Place beef into a shallow dish and cover with marinade. Allowed to marinate for at least 2 hours (preferrably all day).
2. For the tzatziki combine the yogurt, juice of half a lemon, dill, garlic clove and cucumber in a bowl. Season with salt and pepper. Allow to sit in the fridge for at least an hour.
3. Preheat oven to 180°c (160° fanforce). Heat 1 tablespoon of olive oil in a frying pan or griddle pan over a high heat. Cook steak to liking (I did 5 minutes each side) and allow to rest before slicing into thin strips. Place pita breads on a baking tray and warm in the oven for 10 minutes.
4. Layer the pita breads with lettuce, beef, tomato, red onion and tzatziki. Serve.
