Pea & Ham Soup



An easy and hearty soup for those cold winter nights. This recipe could be adapted easily for the slow cooker. This soup also freezes really well.

Pea & Ham Soup
  • 2 ham hocks approx 1.2kg altogether
  • 1 brown onion chopped
  • 3 medium carrots peeled and chopped
  • 4 celery ribs chopped
  • 3 garlic cloves crushed
  • 2 bay leaves
  • 2 litres of water
  • 1 tablespoon Vegeta chicken stock powder
  • 500g green split peas rinsed well
  • Salt and pepper
  • Olive oil
1. In a large pot add 1 tablespoon of olive oil over a medium heat. Saute onion for a few minutes and add celery, carrot, bayleaves and garlic. Saute for another two minutes then add ham hock, split peas, water and stock powder, season with salt and pepper and stir.
2. Reduce heat and and allow to simmer for 3 hours covered or until split peas have broken down and hock is tender, stirring occasionally. After 3 hours remove hock and allow to cool for 10 minutes. Remove rind and fat and shred meat with two forks.
3. With a handheld blender blend soup until desired consistency. (optional step)
4. Add shredded meat back to soup and allow to warm through. Serve with crusty bread.
