Swedish Meatballs


This dish is so easy to make and everyone loves it. We hadn't had these in ages so I decided to make my own recipe.

Swedish Meatballs
Serves 6

  • 500g lean beef mince
  • 500g pork mince
  • 1 cup panko breadcrumbs
  • 1 large egg
  • 1/2 teaspoon allspice
  • 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
  • 1 small brown onion finely diced
  • 2 tablespoons chopped fresh parsley
  • 2 garlic cloves crushed
  • Salt and pepper for seasoning

Gravy
  • 2 cups water
  • 1 cup light thickened cream
  • 3 tablespoons plain flour
  • 20g butter
  • 2 teaspoons beef stock powder
  • Salt and pepper for seasoning

1. In a bowl combine mince, garlic, onion, parsley, nutmeg, allspice, breadcrumbs and egg. Season with salt and pepper. Mix well and shape into equal size meatballs. Place on a plate, cover and allow to firm up in fridge for at least 30 minutes.
2. In a large frying pan heat 1 tablespoon of oil over a medium high heat and cook meatballs in two batches, for approx 4 minutes each side. Put meatballs aside on a plate. Add butter to the same pan and melt. Stir in flour and cook until it starts to brown. Gradually add the water, whisking as you go. Stir in cream, stock powder and season with salt and pepper. Add meatballs to pan and allow to simmer for a further 15 minutes.
3. Serve with mash or pasta.
